The Whitman Massacre by Matt M.
Thesis
In the 1840's, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman had settled as missionaries in Waiilaptu which was occupied by the Cayuse Indians. Primarily both parties were friendly towards one another, but because of the rejection of each others culture, the outbreak of black measles, and the rumors spread by Joe Meek, lead to the killing of the Whaitmans and twelve others. As a result, the relationships were hostile between the Native Americans and the White settlers in the west, and the development of Oregon was delayed.
